The borough of Zelienople, Pennsylvania has been on the rise for quite some time. As suburbia continues to appeal to a substantial portion of society, Zelienople offers a lot of benefits to its residents. Geographically located approximately 28 miles from downtown Pittsburgh, Zelienople offers that small-town feel, while being close to a major city. Not only is it close to Pittsburgh, but it is also only around 15 minutes from the rapidly growing area of Cranberry/Wexford. Located next to route 79, modern restaurants are popping up in the Zelienople area. Today we explore one of these restaurants, ShuBrew, who is serving creative dishes with a great selection of craft beers.

The cuisine – ShuBrew’s focus is on modern, creative comfort food. The menu is simple, there is enough of a selection to give you variety, but it is not overwhelming with a crazy number of choices. A lot of the items are made in-house and made from scratch. They also offer generous portion sizes without sacrificing quality.

Appetizers – Start off your meal with a creative appetizer. Instead of your standard apps such as provolone sticks, onion rings, fried zucchini, etc., ShuBrew gets a little more creative. Who does not love a delicious soft pretzel? The Pretzilla features a huge Mediterra Bakery pretzel with beer mustard and cheese. The Sweetish Meatballs feature potato stuffed meatballs with lingonberry jam and gravy. ShuBrew takes chicken wings to another level with their delicious Truffalo sauce. The wings are first smoked, then fried to extra crispy, and finished with a combination of their truffle/buffalo sauce.

Bowls – Bowls and stir fry’s are great because they give you variety, balance, and are relatively healthy. The ShuBrew’s Original Fried Rice (captioned) features their signature fried rice with mushrooms, onions, carrots, and eggs. Make it spicy for an extra half dollar, and for a small upcharge add your choice of bacon, pork belly, chicken, or house kimchi. The ShuNodle Bowl features sun noodles, pea shoots, scallions, and soy-marinated egg. As with the fried rice, you can add your choice of protein.

Sandwiches – Their featured sandwiches are creative with generous portion sizes. The Lady Kluck Fried Chicken Sandwich features an overly generous portion of chicken with pickles, onions, mayo & lettuce. You can pick from plain, BBQ, or hot. Picture a Chic Fil A sandwich on steroids. The Fast-Food Burger gives you a gourmet burger, with the features of grabbing a burger at a fast-food restaurant. Double beef patty, white American cheese, pickles, onions, lettuce, and house sauce on a brioche bun.

Other menu items – ShuBrew also features a variety of pizzas. If you want something super healthy go with their greens and soups. They also offer a variety of items on their kids’ menu that are creative but simple for your kids to enjoy.

Craft beer selection – The beer selection offers a wide variety of craft beers. You will have to check the menu as the selections change. One thing that impressed me is the prices are very reasonable. You can get a beer that is light or go for something that is much stronger depending on your taste.

BREWERY and RESTAURANT ADDS CHARM TO OLD FASHIONED YET MODERN ZELIENOPLE, PA

My final take – For those that have been following me for a while now, I will go anywhere. My primary focus is places you would see on Diners, Drive Inns, and Dives. My concern with newer, modern places is too much flare, high cost, and smaller portions. I did not find any of this at ShuBrew. The food was creative, delicious, affordable, and the portion sizes were surprisingly large. The service was great too. If you are hungry and passing Zelienople on route 79, I recommend checking this place out, you will not be disappointed!
