Aliquippa, Pennsylvania once hosted the largest steel mill in the world: Jones and Laughlin Steel that stretched 7 miles down the Ohio River. The huge smokestacks extended over the hills of Beaver County like the arms of God, spewing flames around the clock, lighting the skies orange. The area is the hometown of many professional athletes such as Mike Ditka, Ty Law, Darrelle Revis, Paul Posluszny, Tony Dorsett, “Pistol” Pete Maravich, Sean Gilbert, and many others. It still has some hidden gems which have withstood the test of time. Mac’s Donuts, being one of them, has been there since 1959. Let us look at why everyone around town and the surrounding area simply loves Mac’s Donuts.

What makes a great donut you ask? A quality donut has a combination of 4 key elements, which include flavor, texture, fillings, and freshness. Mac’s nails all these elements. They are made fresh daily using the same recipe that has been passed down from the generations. Have you ever had donuts that you can tell were frozen and just heated up? They are functional, but nothing beats homemade. Although they have a wide variety and choice, their staples are their glazed and cream-filled donuts. If you are from the Steel City, there is something special about ordering a cream-filled, long john style donut. If you do not know what I am talking about, go and try one, you will see!

Mac’s is also known for excellent customer service and friendly staff. They place emphasis on how they treat the customer and making sure they treat their employees right as well. It has an old-school and inviting feel and has not changed much over the years. Their coffee is very underrated as well.

Summary

As always, my final take. The success of this establishment over the years can be contributed to several factors. The factor I want to place key emphasis on is resiliency. Mac’s had to overcome the shutting down of the Steel Mills, and the recent arrival in Aliquippa of a major, successful franchise in Dunkin Donuts. They passed with flying colors, and the loyalty of their customer base is unmatched. Growing up in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, you are taught at an early age the importance of hard work, loyalty, and treating people with respect. There is a certain muscle memory in this area where people can get knocked down, get back on their feet, and fight their way out of any obstacle. It is no secret in an area with this fundamental philosophy that Mac’s Donuts has been so successful. Ask anyone from the area and they will tell you, if you are bringing home donuts, that bag or box better say Mac’s!
